To Our Athletes

The McCourt Foundation is committed to staging our 2021 series of events with the health and safety of our athletes, volunteers and community as our top priority. After careful consideration and following guidance provided by the Medical and Operations Advisory Group the McCourt Foundation is announcing a series of date changes to our 2021 event schedule, as well as an update to our Rose Bowl Half Marathon and 5K racing format:

Rose Bowl 5K: January 16 & 17, 2021

Rose Bowl Half Marathon: March 27 & 28, 2021

LA Big 5K: May 22, 2021*

Los Angeles Marathon presented by ASICS: May 23, 2021*

*These dates are pending final approval of all city partners, applicable health departments and other governmental agencies.

The Rose Bowl Half Marathon & 5K will now take place on over two days on separate weekends in January and March respectively. This will allow us to ensure proper runner and walker distancing as well as a safer, more manageable event flow.

March and May events dates will continue to be evaluated to meet the highest possible health and safety of our participants, volunteers and partners. These considerations will include:

Significantly limiting field sizes

Covid-19 vaccinations and rapid-testing for participants

Mask use

Hygiene practices and procedures

We will continue to share new developments, health & safety protocols, additional details on new racing format including bib-pick up and racing procedures.

The McCourt Foundation appreciates the continued support of our athlete’s, the community and our partners. We encourage everyone to follow the recommended CDC guidelines and we look forward to seeing everyone on the road again in 2021.

2021 Event Details

The Rose Bowl 5K - January 16 & 17, 2021

Participants will have the opportunity to run or walk on-site at the Rose Bowl at pre-reserved individual or family start times scheduled over these two days to assure appropriate physical distancing and to limit the number of people on the course and at the start and finish line area. Runners and walkers will start as individuals or family groups with ample spacing between starts. Runners/walkers will be timed, and limited support will be available. Details to follow on rosebowlhalfmarathon.com.

Runners and walkers can also participate virtually at times and locations of their choosing.

The Rose Bowl Half Marathon – March 27 & 28, 2021

Participants will have the opportunity to participate on-site at the Rose Bowl in pre-reserved and scheduled wave start times over these two days to assure appropriate physical distancing and to control the number of people on the course and at the start and finish line area. The number of people included in each wave start will be determined by then current health guidelines and conditions. The race will be timed with most normal race amenities delivered in a safe and sanitary way. The racecourse will be two loops within the Arroyo adjacent to the Rose Bowl. Details to follow on rosebowlhalfmarathon.com.

The Los Angeles Marathon and LA Big 5K  - May 22 & May 23, 2021

The expectation is that the Los Angeles Marathon and LA Big 5K will be delivered in their usual formats and on their normal race courses with changes to start line procedures for better participant spacing, aid stations, packet pickup, and post-race operations and gatherings. Details of these technical safety measures will be made available at lamarathon.com . Registration for the Marathon will focus on the Marathon’s traditional California/western state market area in order to limit participation from outside these areas.

If we can’t deliver the Marathon and LA Big 5K in their normal formats on May 22-23, we are developing a November 2021 contingency date for these races. That said, we are optimistic that vaccine and rapid-testing developments, reduced field size, spacing and hygiene safety measures will allow us to conduct safe and fun races on our normal race courses on the May dates. We are not currently considering a virtual format for the Marathon.
